Kind — in Zweifeln. Er überlegt: „Und jetzt? Was soll ich machen? Nehme
ich die Einladung an? Schlage ich sie aus? Lasse ich mir eine liebenswürdige
Entschuldigung einfallen?
annehme?
Meine sehr
verehrten
Damen und
Herren,
geblieben.
berühmten Diskothek in Barcelona.
nennen soll: Bernat Metge, JV Foix, Narcís Oller, Anselm Turmeda, Joan Brossa,
Joanot Martorell, Llorenç Villalonga, Jordi de Sant Jordi, Jaume Roig, Josep
Carner, Jacint Verdaguer, Isabel de Villena, Josep Maria de Sagarra, Àngel
„Was will dieser Mann!“?
angesagten kommerziellen Tamtam folgen wollen.
Nationen in New York während der Franco-Diktatur.
ungerührt ließ: „I am a Catalan. Today, a province of Spain. But what has been
Catalonia?
was war Katalonien früher?
„Polli Chick, so spatzig, glatzig, krätzekratzig, lederlatzig
und goldschnappschnappig,
bekam sechs Küken, so spatz, glatz, krätzekratz, lederlatz
Wäre also

Pensa: “I ara ¿què faig? ¿Accepto la invitació? ¿No
l’accepto? ¿La declino amb alguna excusa amable? Si l’accepto, ¿què en pensarà la
gent?
té tendència a pensar moltes coses, i a treure moltes conclusions.
demanes pomes treu conclusions.
Si
Senyores
i senyors,
Alguna cosa semblant. Tot i
dúctil i tan continuada.
i poeta.
Hauria
d’esmentar l’Arxiduc Lluís Salvador d’Àustria-Toscana, S’Arxiduc? ¿Hauria
¿O potser fóra millor no citar-ne cap?
Siguem sincers i optimistes: ben poques.
Today, a province of Spain. But what
has been Catalonia?...”: “Sóc català.
Us explicaré per què.
¿importa gaire què s’hi diu exactament?
¿No
I això sí
Bona tarda.
.............

Since I have never been one for making speeches (and I’m not sure I’d know how),
I’m going to tell you a story.
The story is about a writer (a writer who always speaks very fast) who is invited one
day to make the official opening speech at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
This happens the year in which Catalan culture is the guest culture of the Fair. A year
that could be, let’s say, 2007. The writer in question —Catalan himself and, hence,
on his guard— hesitates before accepting the assignment. He thinks, “Now what
should I do? Accept the invitation? Not accept it? Should I decline with a pleasant
excuse? If I accept, what will people think? If I don’t accept, what will people think?”
I don’t know how these things work in other countries, but I can assure you that in
my country people tend to think many thoughts, and to draw many conclusions. If
you say one day that, when the tailor takes your measurements for a suit and asks,
“Do you dress right or left?”, you answer that you dress right (or left), people draw
conclusions. If you go to the fruit store and order apples they draw conclusions. If
you order oranges, they draw them as well.
Whatever you do —dress right or left, buy apples or oranges— people have a very
high degree of perspicacity. People are practically clairvoyant, and they always
Ladies
and
gentlemen,
deduce one thing or another, right down to seeing cities that don’t appear on any
map. If you step forward, you should have stood still. If you stand still, you should
have stepped forward. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
But as it happens the writer in question feels he doesn’t owe anyone an apology for
forming part of the culture they have invited to be the guest at Frankfurt that year,
so he decides to accept. Obviously they will never propose to him that he make the
official opening speech at the Frankfurt Book Fair the year they invite the Turkish,
Vietnamese, or N’gndunga culture. So he says yes, he’ll do it, and he sits right
down at a table, gets out a ball point pen and a notebook, and starts ruminating on
what he should say.
He feels a bit perplexed. Throughout the years, history’s largesse has not been on
the side of Catalan literature. Languages and literatures should never be on the
receiving end of geopolitical strategies, but they are, and in a big way. This is why
he is surprised that an operation like this —the Frankfurt Book Fair, dedicated to
the greater glory of the publishing industry— has decided to invite a culture with a
fragmented literature, divided up among several nation-states in none of which it
is really an official language (even though one and a half of them proclaim that it
is, just so long as this proclamation doesn’t irritate the tourists, the skiers, or the
butane gas deliverymen).
This is why he has his doubts regarding the invitation to Frankfurt. Has the world
suddenly become magnanimous with the Catalans, when there are so many who
would prefer them to be perpetually on the periphery? He remembers, moreover,
another literary operation, now more than a century ago (in 1904) —more Nordic
and a good deal more pompous—, in which the jury of the Nobel Prize for
Literature awarded the prize to Frederic Mistral. Frederic Mistral was not Catalan.
He was Occitan. But the reference serves —not only for some Catalans and some
Occitans to feel a bond— but also because the award so irritated the Nation-State
purists (“Soyez propre, parlez francais!“) that never again in our lifetime has any
stateless literature been awarded a Nobel Prize.
Beyond the feeling of perplexity, the character in our story feels a sense of
justice. Perhaps “justice” is not the precise word. Something like that. Even
though —not to repeat himself— the political avatars have not given us much
cause for joy, Catalan literature is clearly one of the cornerstones of European
culture. No stateless literature in this Europe (which they now claim we
are building together) has produced such a solid, ductile, and continuous
literature.
Should he explain all of this in his speech? Maybe he could begin by saying that
the initial impetus that gave Catalan literature a preferential place in Europe
during the Middle Ages was born of Ramon Llull (Raymundus Lullus, Raimundo
Lulio, Raymond Llull, Raymond Lully: whichever you prefer). Ramon Llull was a
philosopher, storyteller, and poet. He was from Mallorca, this Mallorca that has
now turned into a geriatric-tour-operated ‘Bundesland’. Born long before tourist
agencies, low-cost airlines, and the invention of “Balearization” came to dictate
the rules of life of those coasts, centuries before the arrival of Boris Becker and
Claudia Schiffer, in the mid 13th century Ramon Llull constructed a rigorous and
shapely language, the same language we still speak and write, in a vibrant and
corrupted way.
But the writer still has doubts. Since he will be speaking in Frankfurt, should he
dress it up with details that might interest the German-speaking public? Should
he mention the Archduke Louis-Salvador of Austria-Tuscany, S’Arxiduc, as he was
known? Should he mention Messrs. Damm and Moritz, beer brewers of Germanic
origin, founders of two of the brands of beer still drunk nowadays by Catalans? It is
clear that, if he did, they’d call him frivolous, and this gives him all the more reason
to do it. While he’s at it, he could mention Mr. Otto Zutz, the great ophthalmologist
—“certified in Spain and in Germany”— whose name ultimately graced a splendid
Barcelona discotheque, and who, in his lifetime, tested the eyesight of many a
citizen of Barcelona. Some members of the family of Carles Riba, the poet, for
example, as can be gleaned from what his grandson —Pau Riba, a poet in his own
right, as well as a singer— says in the text accompanying his record “Dioptria”
(“Diopter”).
Nor does he know whether he should cite the greatest names that have spun the
literary thread that brings us to the present: Bernat Metge, J.V. Foix, Narcís Oller,
Anselm Turmeda, Joan Brossa, Joanot Martorell, Llorenç Villalonga, Jordi de Sant
Jordi, Jaume Roig, Josep Carner, Jacint Verdaguer, Isabel de Villena, Josep Maria
de Sagarra, Angel Guimerà, Santiago Rusiñol, Joan Maragall, Eugeni d’Ors, Josep
Pla, Joan Sales, Mercè Rodoreda… And, should he do it in this disorderly way or
name them in chronological order?
Or maybe it would be better not to cite any of them?
Won’t reading the names of all these writers (most of whom are unknown to the
literary world that circulates in Frankfurt) just be tedious for the audience at the
opening ceremony who will have to listen to so many unfamiliar names? Won’t they
be looking at their watches and thinking, “What a bore!”? And so he decides he
won’t mention any names (even though, in fact, he has already mentioned them in
the very process of describing his doubts as to whether he should mention them
or not). What’s more, he’s read that at the Frankfurt Book Fair there will be an
exhibition that explains all this. Although —to be frank— how many of the persons
who attend this inaugural event will later visit this exhibition with any more interest
than a merely official show of etiquette? Let us be frank and optimistic: very
few. Even if this is a Book Fair, where the least-known authors ought to be the
ones who would most pique the reading appetite of those who were interested in
discovering literary gems and not simply following the commercial drumbeat of
what is in vogue at the time.
But the more he ruminates on it, the less clearly he sees how the speech should
be. Since many people have formed their idea of the world from the vantage point
of the current politico-cultural power geometry, perhaps he could tell them that
in Europe—once Latin had been shredded into the vulgar Romance languages—,
the first treatise on Law was the Catalan “Consulate of the Sea,” which established
the rules for maritime relations in the Mediterranean. Perhaps he could add that
some of the first European treatises on medicine, dietetics, philosophy, surgery, or
gastronomy were also written in the Catalan language.
But what use will all these facts be? What have other writers in previous inaugural
speeches at this very same Fair said before him? The writer then tracks down
a few of these opening speeches and reads them. Almost always, in all of these
speeches, there is a grand exaltation of the writer’s own culture, and he sees
clearly that to those who do not belong to the culture being exalted all the
speeches sound distant, like the sound of a river flowing to the sea without
our noticing.
These speeches are not unlike the one made by Pau Casals, the cellist, at the
United Nations in New York, during the Franco dictatorship. That was a speech that
moved Catalans with the same intensity that it left the rest of the inhabitants of the
planet indifferent: “I am a Catalan. Today, a province of Spain. But what has been
Catalonia? Catalonia has been the greatest nation in the world. I will tell you why.
Catalonia had the first Parliament, long before England. Catalonia had the first
United Nations…”
He also observes that other writers who have delivered the opening speech at the
Book Fair have interspersed poems in the text. Maybe he should do that, too. He
could, for example, read the tongue-twister that the great Salvador Dalí read one
day (in a phenomenal parody of a military speech), as if it were the most sublime
poetry in this world:
“A teeny-tiny mommy lousie, itchy, screechy, bowlegged and beachy,
had six teeny-tiny baby lousies, itchy, screechy, bowlegged and beachy.
If the mommy lousie hadn’t been teeny-tiny, itchy, screechy,
bowlegged and beachy,
the six little lousies wouldn’t have been teeny-tiny, itchy, screechy,
bowlegged and beachy.”
In truth, if the speech is part of a ritual and, as in all rituals, what really matters is
the form, the protocol, the suit jacket, the tie (or the absence of a tie), does what is
said, exactly, matter that much at all? In a religious ceremony celebrated in a dead
language (a mass in Latin, for example), does it matter all that much if some
portion of the faithful doesn’t understand the text? Even more to the point: must
anything concrete be said at all? Politicians are great jugglers, and hence their
speeches are exemplary: full of stock phrases which —so as to be perceived as
responsible individuals— they apply with great mastery at the right moment even
if, in truth, they are nothing more than smoke: letters that form syllables that form
words that do the deed.
Years ago, Carles Santos, the extraordinary musician, recorded a splendid piece
that fell somewhere between a declaration of love and a political speech. It is a
text in which vacuous phrases and promises have been replaced with the constant
repetition of the word “Sargantaneta,” “little lizard,” seasoned with exalted
adjectives. (“Sargantaneta,” with a slight alteration, “Sagrantaneta,” is the name
of his fishing boat.) Wouldn’t the ideal speech for an event like the opening of
the Book Fair be, in fact, a text full of stock phrases, of “little lizards”? A text so
abstract and so empty that, without changing a single word or phrase, it could be
used just as well at a literary, sporting, hunting, or stamp-collecting event? A text
that would serve just as well to present a new book of lyric poetry as to inaugurate
a train route. A speech so ambiguous that it would be all rhythm —rhythm,
rhythm!—, but in truth would mean nothing: absolutely nothing.
This is what the writer who always speaks very fast (and who is invited one day to
make the official opening speech at the Frankfurt Book Fair), wonders whether or
not he should say. He also wonders whether —if he says it— his listeners will take
much notice. He also wonders whether —if they take notice— they will understand
much of what he means. He also thinks that, in fact, he could say any other thing
without changing things all that much so long as he adheres to ceremony in all the
rest of the details. One of the most important features of which, by the way, is time.
And this he is clear about, indeed. When the time comes to finish— the maximum
number of minutes stipulated is fifteen— he will look at his watch [he looks at his
watch] and say:
—That’s all. Thank you very much. Good evening.
.............

Oller, Anselm Turmeda, Joan Brossa, Joanot Martorell, Llorenç Villalonga, Jordi
de Sant Jordi, Jaume Roig, Josep Carner, Jacint Verdaguer, Isabel de Villena,
Josep Maria de Sagarra, Àngel Guimerà, Santiago Rusiñol, Joan Maragall, Eugeni
D’Ors, Josep Pla, Joan Sales, Mercè Rodoreda...
¿O quizá sería preferible no citar a ninguno?
o no).
Today, a
province of Spain. But what has been Catalonia...?”: “Soy catalán.

Harry Potter and the Order of the PhoenixCoinciding with the opening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the world-wide Internet debut of Èric and the Army of the Phoenix (Èric i l'Exèrcit del Fènix). Subtitled in English, "Èric and the Army of the Phoenix" documents the odyssey of 14-year-old Èric Bertran, unfairly accused of terrorism. Èric has since been popularly dubbed the "Catalan Harry Potter".

Èric and the Army of the Phoenix documents the truth and the personal consequences -and the politics at play- in the case of Èric Bertran, a boy from Lloret de Mar, a town some 75 km north of Barcelona (Catalonia). When he e-mailed a grocery chain to demand they label their products in Catalan, the language of Catalonia, 14-year-old Èric and his family were subjected to the midnight invasion of their home by thirty police officers bearing a search warrant from the Spanish government. The accusation: terrorism. A big fan of the "Harry Potter" series, Èric created a website that he called Army of the Phoenix, inspired by the famous J.K. Rowling stories, signing his e-mails with the name from his website. Even though they knew full well that the website belonged to a 14-year-old, from that point on, the Spanish authorities insisted on accusing Èric of being a member of an army of terrorists. His family has since taken legal action against the government of Spain for moral and psychological harassment of a minor, taking their case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg and to the United Nations' International Court of Justice.

Èric Bertran and his brother Àdam tell their story in this documentary by Xevi Mató, with English subtitles by Heather Hayes. The film features statements by author Víctor Alexandre, who supervised the book about the case. Alexandre himself has also written an entertaining and controversial play about the incident, which débuted in Barcelona in 2007. Also featured in the film are contributions by Member of Parliament Joan Puig, who defended Èric before the Spanish assembly, and by Èric's attorney Emili Colmenero, who explains how the Spanish justice system connected a child to an Al Qaeda cell.

"Freedom for Catalonia" Spanish authorities have prosecuted a child for terrorism! Incredible but true!

THE WORLD MUST HEAR ABOUT THIS

Spanish authorities have prosecuted a child for terrorism! Incredible but true!

14-year-old Èric Bertran e-mailed companies requesting labeling in Catalan
language, using the "Phoenix" monicker from the Harry Potter books. The Spanish
police accused him of organizing an Al Qaeda cell. The authorities took him all
the way to the Spanish High Court.

From August 27 to September 2, we're getting the word out, through blogs, press
releases, and other media. Here's the idea: We want this film about the Èric
Bertran case to be seen as many times as possible from September 3rd to 9th, so
that it ends up ranking in the "most watched" circuit.

Through this coordinated effort, with the help of new communications and
information technologies, we hope to get some international coverage of this
case, and the true deficit of democracy in the Spanish State, as well as the
fact that the Catalan people are now demanding their right to define themselves
as a sovereign nation.

The documentary has been uploaded to YouTube in five parts. Here's the link to
the first part of the video, for the purposes of the mass viewing:

Scotland the next state in Europe ! ! !

ESCÒCIA CAMINA CAP A LA SOBIRANIA PLENA . QUÈ HEM DE FER A CATALUNYA?

Yes,
First Minister

Banff & Buchan MP, Gordon MSP and First Minister of the Scottish Parliament - Alex Salmond - on a historic week in politics

My commitment to Scotland

On May 16th, the Scottish Parliament elected me as their nominee for First Minister of Scotland.

That followed the election of May 3rd, when the SNP became the first political party since 1955 to beat the Labour Party in an election in Scotland.
Following my election, it was my privilege to address the Parliament as follows:
"Presiding Officer,
This Parliament – created by the People of Scotland in a referendum - is bigger than any of its members, or any one Party.

I believe that Scotland is ready for change and for reform. This is a small nation with a big future; but it is also a small nation with big challenges. It was said the other day that Scotland is a divided nation. Given the closeness of the election result, I can understand that in some ways. However, it is not the case.
Certainly, the gap between rich and poor is too great. We need to grow faster. We need to heal the scars of the past. We need to be greener. We need to be still smarter. But we are not divided. We have a sense of ourselves; a sense of community and, above all, a sense of the 'common weal' of Scotland.

In some ways, we're not even a divided Parliament. Of course, in this part of the chamber we seek independence and equality for Scotland – not everyone agrees. But there is a broad consensus on the need for this Parliament to assume greater responsibility for the governance of Scotland.

There is an understanding that we are engaged in a process of self government – and an awareness of the distance we have already travelled. In 1961, Bashir Ahmad came to Glasgow to drive buses. In 1961, the very idea of a Scots Asian sitting in a Scots Parliament was doubly unimaginable.

But Bashir is here, and we are here, and that part of the community of Scotland is woven into the very tartan of our parliament. And we are stronger
– so much stronger – as a result. We are diverse – not divided.

The nature and composition of this third Scottish parliament makes it imperative that this government will rely on the strength of its argument in Parliament – and not the argument of the parliamentary strength.

Despite all the challenges we will face together, I welcome that as a chance to develop a new and fundamentally more reflective model of democracy.

The days since the 3rd have been understandably dominated by questions over the structure of government – will there be a coalition, or will we have a minority government?

Let me say to Parliament that what matters more to the people we represent is less the structure of the government and more what we – all of us – achieve on the people's behalf.

Presiding Officer, all of us in this Parliament have a responsibility to conduct ourselves in a way which respects the Parliament the people have chosen to elect.
That will take patience, maturity and leadership on all sides of the chamber. My pledge to Parliament today is that any Scottish Government led by me will respect and include this Parliament in the governance of Scotland over the next four years.
In this century, there are limits to what governments can achieve. But one thing any government I lead will never lack is ambition for Scotland.

Today, I commit myself to the Leadership, wholly and exclusively in the Scottish national interest. We will appeal for support, policy by policy, across this chamber.

That is the Parliament the People of Scotland have elected – and that is the Government I will be proud to lead."

'Let me say to Parliament that what matters more to the people we represent is less the structure of the government and more what we – all of us – achieve on the people's behalf'

"Flanders could be a next free state in the European Union in the next ten years . Why not Catalonia ? "

King ends first round of talks

This morning, King Albert received the leader of the Francophone Christian democrats Joëlle Milquet and her Flemish colleague of the liberal party Bart Somers. After the talks held yesterday evening with Flemish Christian democrat leader Jo Vandeurzen and French speaking liberal leader Didier Reynders, the King will now try and defuse the explosive situation that resulted from the failed negotiations on the formation of a new government.

The exact contents of the meetings with the King have not been disclosed.

Neither Mrs Milquet nor Mr Somers wanted to give comment as they drove through the gates of Belvédère Castle, the King’s private home in the municipality of Laken.

Didier Reynders was slightly more talkative as he left the gates last night. According to the MR leader, it would become clear on Sunday evening whether an agreement between the different parties had been reached.

Still according to Mr Reynders, the negotiations on the government formation would then resume on Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Unprecedented royal intervention

The news of the King’s intervention in the crisis was announced yesterday afternoon, after King Albert had received formateur Yves Leterme (Flemish Christian democrat, photo).

In a communiqué, the Palace announced King Albert was to held political consultations with the political party leaders over the weekend. During that time, the communiqué said, the actual formation talks lead by Mr Leterme would be put on hold.

As such, the statement left in the open whether all political parties would be involved or just those four that have won the June elections.

The initiative for this highly unusual procedure is reported to have come from Mr Leterme himself.

In deadlock after the negotiations between the Flemish and French speaking parties had fallen through over the communal issues, Mr Leterme felt he had no other option left.

The French speaking negotiators refuse to accept the Flemish demands, such as the introduction of Flemish number plates or the transfer of the competence of Labour and Employment to the regions and say they are aimed at fleecing the federal state.

The Flemish parties are indignant about the French speakers’ counterclaims.

These involve the expansion of the Brussels region at the cost of Flanders and the abolition of certain rights of the Flemish living in the capital.

It is not yet clear what will happen next. Yet it is thought likely that the King will invite Mr Leterme for another audience at the Palace.

YEARLY KOS CONVENTION

Ireland's OWN: History (foto: The Horse of the People)

Ireland's OWN: History (foto:Appeared in Ireland's Own -The Horse of the People-)

Secret Talks — Father Alec Reid and Gerry Adams*

"To say that Father Alec Reid is the unrecognised inspiration of the Irish peace process would be an understatement. Long known as a confidant of the Sinn Féin leader, Reid is accorded in most accounts the role of message carrier for Adams during the odyssey to peace, but the full story reveals him to be a much more substantial figure, who initiated, devised and nurtured many of the ideological innovations that made Gerry Adams's journey possible. Passionate about his project, secretive, trustworthy, but at times gullible and naïve, Reid persisted at times when others in the British and Irish governments were close to giving up — his reward was the IRA cease-fires and the political settlement that eventually came more than a decade after his bid to save Tommy Cochranes's life.1 To those who support his efforts he is the unsung and largely unrewarded hero of the peace process; to those who do not he is the crafty Wolsey to Adams's Henry VIII.

"To British civil servants who had secret dealing with Reid in later years, the Catholic priest seemed a curious choice for a go-between for Adams…

"Reid contended that the Church would bring a special flavour to the effort arising from its extraordinary, centuries-old influence over Irish society. This, he would say, would bestow a moral authority and stature on the enterprise that would both legitimise it and add to the pressure on republicans to respond positively. Reid's third point followed on from this. He argued that the Church's role in providing a neutral setting for the process would never give cover to any other political parties who were talking to Adams and his colleagues. "The point he made, and John Hume grasped this particularly well was that if there was a leak, responsibility could be shifted onto the Church," recalled an Irish participant.

"Had news of Reid's 1982 overtures to Adams leaked out at the time, there is little double that in the prevailing climate the Irish political and media establishment would have been aghast at the revelation of any contact between the Church and the Provos. But the news would have shocked many republicans as well. The hunger strike scars were still were still fresh when Reid approached Adams and the memory of the role played by the Church still rankled with rank-and-file Provos. During the prison protest, republicans had bitterly accused the Catholic hierarchy of betraying the hunger strikers and of kowtowing to the Thatcher government. The Church's stance, they claimed, had been supine and had encouraged Thatcher to take an unbending line on the prison protest, contributing in no small measure to the ten hunger strike deaths…

"By 1985 and 1986 small glimpses of the secret diplomacy were occasionally visible, and with hindsight it is possible to discern the direction in which the talks were heading at this time. Three elements went together to make up the embryonic peace strategy. One was a proposal to forge an alliance of Irish nationalists that would replace the IRA's violence as the cutting edge of the republican struggle. The second was the idea that a conference should be held to which all shades of opinion in Ireland would be invited and which would hammer out a political settlement. The third was a declaration of neutrality from the British, a statement that said they had no desire to impose a settlement on anyone in Northern Ireland and would be content to accept whatever political representatives could agree in negotiation. Taken together the peace strategy outlined a way in which Adams could accept the principle of consent in relation to the political future for Northern Ireland while being able to say that none of the core republican doctrines had been abandoned or compromised.

"The tip of the iceberg soon became visible. Gerry Adams first broached the idea of a pan-nationalism at Sinn Féin's November 1984 Ard Fheis when he called for "a firm, united and unambiguous demand from all Irish Nationalist parties" for an end to the unionist veto. This he said would create a new situation in which future arrangements could be worked out in "business-like negotiations" with all the parties of Ireland. A few months later, in February 1985, during the course of a radio current affairs program, Adams asked the SDLP leader, John Hume, for talks to establish "a united nationalist approach" to the British. In March he again called for a "united and dogmatic Irish nationalist approach" to the North. These were all clues to the direction of the still-secret diplomacy. Cardinal O Fiaich meanwhile was treading similar ground. In January 1984 the Catholic primate urged the convening of a political forum either in Belfast or in Dublin where "representatives of all sides" could meet to discuss the future of the North. Three times in 1985 he called on the British to indicate that they would not be staying in Northern Ireland forever and in the meantime to use their good offices to "try to bring Catholics and Protestants together."

"It was very tentative stuff, and only those who were privy to what was going on behind the scenes could be aware of its real significance. The rest of Ireland, distracted by the ferocity of the IRA's campaign, dismissed the comments either as irrelevant or as deliberate distractions. The idea that the SDLP, Fianna Fáil, or any other constitutional nationalist party would want link up with the Provisionals at that time or that the British would somehow aggress to such far-fetched proposals was simply unimaginable.

"It was also an impossible concept for most Provisional activists and supporters to grasp, at grassroots or even a leadership level. The common IRA/Sinn Féin view of the SDLP and Fianna Fáil, the hatred at the core of their relationship, had been expressed in a bitter statement by the IRA prisoners at the end of the 1981 hunger strike — the same statement that had so bitterly excoriated the Catholic Church. Attitudes had changed little since then. Fianna Fáil, and the other Southern parties, the prisoners had said, were "accessories to the murder" of the ten hunger strikers for failing to confront Thatcher, while the SDLP was merely "an amalgamation of middle class Redmonites, devoid of principle, direction and courage." The enmity between the Provos and the Irish establishment was deep and seemingly unbridgeable.

"Even if Gerry Adams had wanted to confide in his senior colleagues, it is highly questionable whether he would have received a sympathetic hearing. Most IRA activists at this point believed unwaveringly in the armed struggle and tolerated electoral politics only because it seemed to offer, as Adams and others had told them it would, a way of increasing logistical support for the IRA. Had they thought that the political path down which Adams had taken them would lead into negotiations that threatened to dilute dearly held republican beliefs, most would have seen it as treachery.

"So it was that the diplomacy of Father Alec Reid and Gerry Adams was kept a tightly guarded secret even from IRA Army Council. Although Adams was slowly to win over key members of the council to his strategy with the passage of time and did confide in a small group of advisors around him in Belfast, his enterprise with Reid was never discussed or formally approved by the body charged with deciding IRA policy and strategy.

"What the reaction of IRA leaders would have been had they been fully aware of the ideological territory being traversed by the still-secret peace process can only be guessed at…

"The history of contacts between the IRA and the British government was, by 1986, a long but unhappy one. British ministers, including the then Northern Ireland secretary, William Whitelaw, had met a delegation of IRA leaders, including Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, in London as far back as June 1972 during the IRA cease-fire. In 1975 there were further contacts, although this time no British politicians were directly involved, and instead the talking was done between British officials and representatives of the Army Council. The talking in both cases ended in angry recrimination. In 1972 the cease-fire was abandoned within days of the contact amid IRA accusations of British bad faith, while in 1975 Adams and others alleged that the British had tricked the IRA into the cessation in order to buy time to devise the IRA's defeat. Officially the Army Council was in 1986 so hostile to the notion of a cease-fire that it was committed never to talk to the British again, unless it was about their withdrawal from Ireland.

"All this meant that when Gerry Adams decided to open a dialogue with the British about the burgeoning peace process, he chose Father Reid to act as his go-between and representative. The Redemptorist acted as a sort of clerical cutoff providing cover to all involved, both Republican and British, and it was a task he performed with diligence and discretion when, finally, the moment came for Adams to move.2 Precisely when the pair made contact with the British government is not known, but the evidence strongly suggests that sometime in 1986, courtesy of Father Reid, a highly secret line of communication was opened between the Northern Ireland secretary, Tom King, and the Sinn Féin leader.

"In the intervening years both the British and the Sinn Féin leadership have, for reasons best known to themselves, gone to considerable lengths to persuade the outside world that the first contact between them did not take place until much later, in 1990, when British intelligence made contact with the IRA and commenced a dialogue with Martin McGuinness. But both parties have been extremely economical with the truth about the full extent of their dealings with each other.

"As can now be revealed for the first time, confirmation that Gerry Adams was in indirect conversations with the British government as early as 1986, or at least 1987, has been given in interviews with the author by two former British Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland who conducted these dealings with the Sinn Féin leader. One was Tom King, who came to Belfast in September 1985, just before the Hillsborough Agreement was signed, and the other was his successor, Peter Brooke, Secretary of State between 1989 and 1992, a figure whose term of office is most identified with the emergence of the first public clues about the secret diplomacy that lay behind the peace process. Both men have since been elevated to the British House of Lords."

1 Tommy Cochrane was a UDR sergeant kidnapped by the IRA and killed when loyalists failed to exchange, and then killed, kidnapped Republican Joe Donegan.
2 Reid was a Redemptorist. Redemptorists are Jesuits bound by a vow of poverty who work with the poor and working class, and have a strong influence in West Belfast.

Ongizate estatuaren defentsaren aldeko kanpaina

BERRIA » Politika orokorra

2004/10/23

Bizkaiko Gazte Abertzaleak-ek ongizate estatuaren inguruko kanpaina bat prestatu du azkeneko hilabeteotan. Lan talde baten bitartez hasi zen lana, urriaren 9an ikastaro arrakastatsu eta baliagarri batekin bukatu zen. Orain kanpaina aurkezteko unea da eta horretarako triptiko informatiboak eta kartelak prestatu dituzte Bizkaiko GA-ko militanteek.

Kanpainak, ongizate estatua zer den eta bere onurak azaltzen ditu, munduan egun bizi garen egoerari erreparatuz, non neoliberalismoak inposatzen duen merkatu libreak gizarte desegituraketa eta pobrezia eragiten duen . Gazte Abertzaleak-en ustez beharrezkoa da benetako ongizate estatu bat eratzea, pertsonen arteko berdintasunak garatu eta gizarte bidezkoago bat eraikitzeko. Zentzu honetan, kanpainak benetan soziala izan beharko litzatekeen Euskal Herri batengatik apustu egiten du, jasangarria den Euskal Herria eta estatuak herritar guztien eskubideak bermatzen dituen Euskal Herria.

Kanpaina Urriaren 23an hasi zen eta Abenduan bukatuko da eta bere bidez Eusko Jaurlaritzari zera proposatzen dio GAk: Eusko Legebiltzarrean ondoko ardatzak errespetatuz Ongizate Estatuaren aldeko erakunde-adierazpen baten onarpena bultzatu dezala:

• Pentsioen sistema bermatu eta pentsio baxuenen hobekuntza bultzatu.
• Espainiar gobernuari eskumenen trasferentzia exigitu.
• Osasun eta langabezian giza prestazioak bermatu eta prestazio hauen murrizketak ekiditu.
• Ekonomi aktibitate osoa merkatuaren autoerregulazioaren esku hutsetan ez utzi. Estatuak, herritar guztion ekonomi eta giza ongizatea lortzeko, gutxieneko puntu batzuk bermatu behar ditu.
• Liberalizazio latzari kontra egin.
• Behin eta berriz ematen diren pribatizazioei ez.
• Delitu zehatz batzuen hazkundea errazten duten zenbait faktoreri buruzko erreflexioa.
• Zergen gorakada erabakiko balitz, zuzenekoei legokienak (PFEZ, OZ...) lehentasuna euki beharko luke zeharkako zergen ( BEZ, erregaiak, alkohola...) gorakaden aurrean. Txiroak eta aberatsak ez dezala berdin ordaindu. Gehiago daukanak gehiago ordaindu dezala

Alec Reid apaiz irlandarra da, Ipar Irlandako bake prozesuarean aldeko paperarengatik ezaguna.

Erredentziotar 1950ean bihurtu zen, eta zazpi urte geroago apaiztu zen. Limerick, Dundalk eta Galway-en aritu zen Belfastko Clonard monasteriora joan baino lehen. Monasterio hori unionisten Shankill Road kalearen eta erkidego katolikoren artean dago kokatua.

1988an, nahigabe hileta-elizkizun errepublikanoetan sartu zirela medio, IRAk erahildutako bi soldadu britaniarrei azken erritoak eman zizkien Alec Reidek.

1980ko hamarkadaren bukaeran, Sinn Feineko buru Gerry Adams-en eta SDLPko John Hume-ren arteko bilerak ahalbidetu zituen Reidek, nazionalista guztien frontea osatu nahian, negoziazioaren alde bortizkeria arbuia zezaten. Harrezkero Reid Dublingo kontaktu bihurtu zen haiekiko, 1998ko Ostiral Santuko Hitzarmena sinatu zen arte. Garaian publikoak ez zuen Reiden papera ezagutzen, baina Irlandako hainbat Lehen Ministrorekin (Taoiseach) eta Fianna Fáil goiburu batzuekin, Martin Mansergh-ekin esaterako, elkartu zen.

Azken urteotan Eukal Herriko bake prozesuaren alde ere aritu da Reid. 2003ko urtarrilean Sabino Arana Fundazioak saritu zuen bakea eta adiskidetzea sustatzeko ahaleginengatik.

Alec Reid, conflict mediator in Northern Ireland

Alec Reid, conflict mediator in Northern Ireland: We need to talk because no conflict is resolved using the armed forces

The Forum's 141 Questions (93): "Youth in Northern Ireland: How do they experience the conflict? What can they do?" Alec Reid, one of the signers of the Good Friday Agreement, which sealed peace in Ulster, said that, "youth must commit to making sure the peace process survives, and, therefore, to applying the legacy they have fought for." He said that peace studies should be a university degree and emphasized that conflict resolution needs female voices. In regards to the Basque conflict, he recalled that up until now the Spanish government has not wanted to discuss anything--"they have treated them like terrorists"-- and said that ETA does not have any justification because their demands could be made from the autonomous parliament.

Alec Reid, priest who has been fighting for peace in his country for thirty years, emphasized that, "we must make youth understand that, although it may seem difficult, there is a way out of all conflicts." He assured that dialogue needs clear mentalities based on respect for human dignity and in defense of human rights that have been granted. After reiterating that, "we need to talk because no conflict is resolved using the armed forces," Reid, known as the "Irish Gandhi", said that the Israeli authorities and the United States government need to talk, respectively, with the leaders of the Palestinian suicide bombers and Bin Laden: "It's possible that both sides could be surprised to find elements capable of broaching a new negotiation process."

Reid, a man who believes in divine providence, dialogue and active non-violence said: "We all have to represent the next family that will be destroyed by an act of violence." He is in favor of including peace studies in education and, even, making such studies a university degree: "Young people need to understand the reasons for conflicts and the violence they create in order to solve them." He also called for women to form part of the dynamic that pushes conflict resolution. "All voices are necessary. It is very important to have all the resources that women can offer and thus, stop the vicious cycle that keeps them out of the discussion."

As he is currently working in the Basque Country, Reid responded to a question from the public asking him to draw the similarities and differences between the Northern Irish and Basque cases. Alec Reid stated that until now the Spanish government had refused to have any discussions, –“they treated them like terrorists,” he said – while also stating that ETA has no justification because their demands can be met in the Basque Parliament.

In reference to the peace process in Northern Ireland, he predicted that, "the violence will not return to the streets" and that the country "will be the most prosperous in Europe in fifty to sixty years" when the Unionists stop fearing identifying themselves "too closely to nationalists" who must help them to feel more secure.

He said 95% of Irish youth support the peace process: "They will be the center of the future society. They must commit to a peace process that survives, and therefore apply the legacy they fought for. They must understand what peace is and the history they have behind them. They have to assimilate the principals that resolve conflicts so that they won't repeat the mistakes of the past."
